I wanted to know what all the fuss was about so we watched the first episode last night. Holy hell, it’s like three train wrecks in a row with the most otherworldly plot I’ve ever seen, and it’s all true. I keep saying to myself, this guy is crazy, then they introduce an additional character and say to myself, this guy is crazier, then they up the level of crazy 10 more times with 10 more crazy people .
Anyway I highly recommend it.

Crazy crazy people. I couldn’t look away the first few episodes then I had to distance myself to find some sanity

I was skeptical at first but is a ton of fun! It is more absurd than words can describe, even when it gets a little dark with what these people have been up to (two of the characters use their tigers to lure y oung people into relationships, and the cruelty to the animals isn’t graphic but it’s hard to take, at least for me).
I found it helped to research some of the events of the show outside of what’s presented in the show, like the ‘Big Cat Safety Act’ and Carole Baskin’s husband’s disappearance and her animal sanctuary, to be able to make up your own opinions.
Also things escalate each episode, you will NOT be disappointed in sticking with it, you are not just strung along until the murder-for-gore investigation, I haven’t made it there yet and I’d almost forgot about it. 10/10 would recommend

This is the first reality TV I’ve watched since the first season of the Real World.

That Doc guy cree ps me the fuck out. I kinda like the Joe Exotic guy, at least you know where he stands.

Thank you for saying that . In a time where the whole world makes little sense anymore, I sure as hell am NOT going to take refuge in an insane story of a bunch of publicity-seeking whackjobs whacking each other.
If this is “entertainment” and the modern day “chicken soup for the soul”? I want no part of it.
I ran across a copy of Angle of Repose the other day— that’s my chicken soup, RIP Wallace Stegner.

We binge watched it last weekend. It’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever seen. Highly entertaining, but damn that show is filled with assholes.

No, I don’t really like watching things.
![]() 04/02/2020 at 13:47 |

The thing that is most insane about it is that it is NOT a pure reality show. It’s half documentary, half reality show. It’s not like these people auditioned for the parts and were brought together by the show...this shit was already going on. Though the presence of the crew probably helped elevate some of the shit going on.

I really think you should watch it though. I don’t watch any reality TV shows, but this is hands down the most insane, absurd, entertaining thing I’ve ever seen. It’s half reality show, half documentary which is what makes it even more insane.

Same. I have no plans on watching it.

If you haven’t seen further than the first episode you’ll probably change your mind. I think Joe seems genuine and less cunning, but I dislike both of them equally. Joe is easier to read too imo.
I think the producers did a good job of giving you most of the information and letting the viewer make up their mind, I didn’t feel like I was supposed to like anyone more than anyone else (even though I do)

My wife kept hearing me talk about Tiger King but never got into it. I finally understood why, she didn’t think it was real!

Mrs. Snuze and I watched and all I can think is “Holy shit, we are sharing the planet with these people!”
It’s a wild ride, though, and I think it really succeeds as a documentary because it presents most of the subjects fairly objectively (their good and bad) and doesn’t try to steer the viewer down any one path. It also ups the ante each episode - like I knew what the conclusion was (Joe going to jail for murder for hire) but the twists and turns to get there made it worth the watch!

I started it because I really had nothing better to do. In the first episode I thought everyone was a little weird, but in a funny, what a strange person kind of way . Every episode since has just dove further and further into the what-the-actual-hell insanity hole .

Are we all agreed that Carole Baskins probably did kill her second husband, even though Joe Exotic is an untrustworthy s cumbag?
I mean, even OJ Simpson thinks so, and he would know better than the average person, since he was really close friends with so many LAPD officers for years and would have had to study some police as research for some of his roles over the years.

Joe Exotic is a genuine, proven criminal. Carole Baskins is only an alleged criminal, at most.

Even though it’s real it doesn’t seem like it should be.
Surprisingly, I’m enjoying it so far and I have two episodes left to watch.
That said, I don’t think it’s a must watch show at all considering the big deal many people have made of it.
I just finished watching The Shield and every show, reality or fiction , seems to fall short. Now that's a show I'm recommending everyone watch since 7 seasons should take a good chunk out of this isolation.

Agreed, also from what I could find her animal sanctuary is genuine, and she’s open about the mistakes she made ethics wise when she started out with ‘big cats’.
As for murdering her husband I think she had tons of motive, but there’s also a strong chance he decided to disappear (I think as a result of how time consuming and frustrating his first divorce was). Either way I’m doubtful it will be solved.I think the Bayou can hide a lot.
The police that were interviewed or the show did seem suspicious of her, but I think that’s because something shady was certainly involved, either by Carole or her husband in trying to avoid a divorce/taxes with a new identity. They also know it’s the husband/wife most of the time.

So you’re waiting for the novelization?
![]() 04/02/2020 at 15:02 |

Agreed, the producers also seem to go out of their way to show you how these people change the way they act when they know they’re on camera vs not. Of course it’s still reality tv and needs to be taken with a softball sized grain of salt, but it’s still entertaining.
Mindless can be fun

I think she probably did it, but if it ever somehow went to trial and I was on the jury, it would have to be not guilty.

You’re missing out, I expected to hate it too. It’s not groundbreaking or particularly thoughtful, but it doesn’t remind me of the typical predictable and exaggerated reality.
I also didn’t get the impression the personalities had a ton of influence over what got published, especially all the footage of Joe exotic that he ostensibly doesn’t own.

I second this. I watch, and have never watched, any reality shows. But my son wanted to watch this because we used to see the zoo advertisements along I35 in OK and now live in the Tampa area where another major character lives , so I sat with him to watch it. Holy crap, what a train wreck. If you don’t get into it after the first episode, then you can skip the rest.

Agreed, I think it’s more likely but there must be a serious lack of evidence, especially when the show mentions the extent of the police investigation on her property.
I also think she has paid for a lot of good lawyers judging from her lobbying and her copyrighting a photo in order to stop Joe from using it

It’s because of Carole.

Someone leaked a restraining order against Carole by one of her partners before her current husband. She 100% did it. It’s not even a maybe.
![]() 04/02/2020 at 18:46 |

It’s not that sort of thing though.
It’s more like a long form article from The Atlantic or some other serious news site highlighting a crime. Except here the crime and the criminals are so universally ridiculous and also entirely real.
Li ke, have you ever walked into Walmart and seen some dude walking by in hot pink camo chaps? And you can't help but think to yourself,"wow, what is HIS story?". This is his story.
![]() 04/02/2020 at 19:03 |

I mean I sort of get it... but then the actual news reports in the last week sort of muddle it up. the dude from SC claims he runs a legit operation and was completely script-doctored into a villai n, so he wants to sue. The one in Huntsville prison is now an object of sympathy since he has the virus.
NOBODY involved seems to attest to the “accuracy and fidelity” of the show... so it sorta comes across to a non-watcher like “oh, this is The Blair Witch Project”. NEW, FASCINATING, HORRIFYING, ENTERTAINING... AND COMPLETELY CONTRIVED.
maybe we’re just too overwhelmed, but watching more crazy people ain’t stirring my cocoa right now.

I had previous read most of the accounts seperately a few year back when Joe Exotic was first arrested , and from what I can tell the show is pretty accurate to those news reports.
For example, here’s an article from Rolling Stone back in 2015 that pretty much echoes the same description of the South Carolina guy as in the Tiger King show.
https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/tiger-king-doc-antle-zoo-myrtle-beach-70838/
Also, most of the show is just showing these people as they are. The ridiculous part about the SC guy is not that he’s a horrible animal abuser or whatever. It’s that he’s a fat balding white dude with a pony tail who surrounds himself with young women that he dresses up in skintight leather outfits. They didn't make that shit up. They didn't need to.

I don’t know if I can finish this show. I made this gif though!
